COLLEGE HILL LEARNING GARDEN
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
UDCE served as Civil Engineer of Record for civil site design and stormwater management for the College Hill “One Water One City” Learning Garden, located on an empty lot in Bernal Heights on land owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. The project is an innovative, ecoliteracy Learning Garden and outdoor classroom used by four nearby local public elementary schools. The garden is designed to educate students about San Francisco’s water, wastewater, renewable energy and energy efficiency systems as well as provide hands-on exposure to healthy food cultivation and sustainable living practices.
An altered shipping container featuring solar panels and a green roof serves as the site’s toolshed and office. Elements of the Learning Garden include accessible paths of travel, gates and retaining walls, an outdoor classroom, benches, small pond, bio-infiltration basin, planted drainage swales, hand pumps, planting beds, and redwood compost bins.
