RAINBOW RECREATION CENTER
OAKLAND, CA
The LEED Silver renovation and expansion of the Rainbow Recreation Center and surrounding 1.85 acre park help improve services at this much-used community rec center. The new highly transparent building serves as a welcoming entrance and exhibition/ gathering space. The existing gymnasium, fully renovated and wrapped by new, multi-functional additions provide spaces for sports, gatherings, computer use, daycare, offices, and cooking.
Exterior work included an open entry courtyard, new outdoor exercise area, new edible/ educational/ community garden; transformation of existing tennis court into a synthetic soccer practice field; renovation of playground and picnic areas; and landscaping improvements. One of the extra cool components of this project are Project Backboard's mural-covered basketball courts designed by local artist Muzae Sesay.
UDCE provided full civil engineering services for the site and buildings, including the restoration of the adjacent Alameda County Flood Control Channel/ Creek.
